Unique: a new procedure for numerical simulation

The bubble point test is used as a standard for quality control and quality assurance of filter media to determine the diameter of the largest pore. Previously, time-consuming screenings were required to attain precise data. But these are now a thing of the past for GKD – GEBR. KUFFERATH AG. Using their proprietary simulation of the bubble point test and the capillary pressure constants determined in this way, the filtration experts have developed a procedure with which they can precisely determine the size of the largest pore in a matter of seconds for all standard GKD mesh types.

To replace the time-consuming and uncertain process for determining a capillary correction factor for complex pore geometries of woven filter media, GKD has developed a multiphase simulation model which enables the size of the largest pore to be determined in seconds – and with a deviation from screening in the range of mere tenths of a micron. To do this, GKD uses the virtually generated 3D models of the meshes that are stored in its simulation software GeoDict. The mesh specialists then use further CFD tools to create a computational grid and establish a stable value for the correction factor constant. For all of its standard weave types – optimised dutch weaves (ODW), twilled dutch weaves and reverse dutch weaves – the capillary pressure constants have already been determined using the simulation. Apart from the significant savings in time and money through being able to dispense with the physical screening test, the diameter of the largest pore determined in this way is, in fact, considerably more accurate than is the case with the conventional bubble point test. Through the simulation of the bubble point test and the numerical determination of the capillary correction factors, GKD not only provides support for quality control during production runs, but also application-specific optimisation of mesh constructions or the development of new mesh types. This reinforces GKD’s claim to leadership in the production of high-precision industrial meshes.
